The Satyanarayan Puja is a religious worship of the Hindu god Vishnu. Hindus throughout [3] perform Sri Satyanarayan Vrat for the divine blessings of health, wealth, prosperity, opulence, education; relief from troubles and sickness.

It can also be performed because of success in business or career growth; during social functions like marriages, house-warming ceremonies, naming of the children and so on. The details are part of the Katha Story that is usually read during the ritual [4].

It is also performed on special occasions and during times of achievements, as an offering of gratitude to the Lord. These occasions could include marriage, graduation, start of a new job, purchase of a new home, to name a few. In addition, the performance of this most auspicious puja generally confers a child to couples trying to start a family [6].

The Satyanarayan puja can be performed on any day for any reason. It is not a puja confined to any festivities, but Purnima full moon day is considered specifically auspicious for this puja.

Performing this puja in the evening is considered more appropriate. However, one can perform this puja in the morning as well [ citation needed ]. This puja is very simple, can be performed by anyone, and it does not require a priest to perform it.

The original concept was instructions given by rishi Narada Muni while on tour of earth he noticed tremendous amounts of sufferings all around due to malnutrition. He went to lord Vishnu and described the situation and was told with instructions to perform Pooja and the other stories to be narrated. One of the key instruction was to invite as many friends, relatives and neighbors to attend the ceremony and to feed them and to offer as many types of fruits as possible and the sufferings will be eliminated, and this was due to being well fed and consumption of fruits.

The previous night, think of Lord Sri Satyanarayana and mentally decide to perform puja the next day. Invite your relatives and friends. Tradition mandates to abstain from worldly pleasures. On the puja day, early in the morning keeping the same thoughts of worshiping the Lord, take a head bath. If performing the evening, again take a head-bath.

This should be done by both husband and wife. Wear a clean dress. Keep all the things for puja ready, near the altar. The total duration of the puja - start to finish — will be around 3 hours.

Decorate the front door with mango leaves. The place near the altar is cleaned with cow dung, where possible. The Altar is placed in an East-West direction such that the devotees performing the puja will be seated facing east. It is decorated with floral designs, usually using rice flour and other coloured powders. A new white cloth is spread on the Altar and layered with raw rice.According to one view historical Devnarayan belonged to 10th century of Vikram Samvat, according another view, he lived in between Vikram Samvat era.

First view is endorsed by many scholars. The epic of Devnarayan is one of the longest and most popular religious oral narratives of Rajasthan. The oral epic of Devnarayan consists of a number of episodes related to the narrative of Devnarayan. This epic is sung by the Bhopas, the traditional priest-singers of Devnarayan during the nights of the months, November to July in the villages of Rajasthan and Malwa.

The narrative begins with an invocation of a number of deities, whose images are depicted in the phads. The first part called the Bagaravat Bharat is about the heroic deeds of 24 Gurjar brothers, [8] [9] who are born as the sons of the man-lion, Baghji Gurjar. The 24 brothers die after a preordained period of 12 years in a battle against a chieftain of Ran city. The second part is about Bhagavan's incarnation as Devnarayan, the miracles he performs and the revenge he and his cousins ultimately take on the Ran city chieftain.

Devnarayan's mother is Sadu Mata and his father Savai Bhoj, the most courageous of the 24 Bagaravats. Whereas the first part is generally said to be marked by suffering dukhpain, and death, the second is marked by the reunion, miracles and divine testimony parcyo.

The second part, thus entails a reversal of the first part: death and defeat are followed by birth and creation, finally resulting in the establishment of Devnarayan's cult amongst his followers. The narrative begins with a prelude at a time Satya Yugawhen Brahma was performing a Vedic sacrifice jug in Pushkar.

Brahma invited all the gods and Rsis to his sacrifice. Among them is a group of twenty-four Rsis living in the Nag Pahada mountain chain running parallel to Pushkar. The Rsis were disciples of Sankar Shankara. Sankar forbade them from attending the sacrifice, but they insisted on going because they had received invitations from Brahma. Suddenly, Sankar grew ravenously hungry. The Rsis suggested eating the fruits growing in the forest which they consume for a living.

But Sankar said that would not satisfy him. He wanted more than plain fruit.

But nothing else was available in the forest. There was no cereal or grain either. So, he turned to his disciples and began consuming them one after another. After he had eaten them and satiated his hunger, he went to visit Brahma's sacrifice himself. The sacrifice came to a halt because of the sin Sankar had committed. He asks Brahma how he should atone for his sin, whereupon Brahma informed him that the only means would be to offer the Rsis his own body in a future existence, in which the Rsis are to be born as the twenty-four sons of a single father.

This prelude is normally spoken and not sung.

The annual festival called the Ratha yatra celebrated in June or July every year in eastern states of India is dedicated to Jagannath. His image, along with the other two associated deities, is ceremoniously brought out of the sacrosanctum Garbhagriha of his chief temple in Puri Oriya: Bada Deula. They stay there for a few days, after which they are returned to the main temple. Coinciding with the Ratha Yatra festival at Puri, similar processions are organized at Jagannath temples throughout the world.

During the festive public procession of Jagannath in Puri lakhs of devotees visit Puri to see Lord Jagganath in chariot. Thus, Jagannath means "lord of the universe". Both names derive from "Jagannath". This hypothesis states that the Vedic people as they settled into tribal regions adopted the tribal words and called the deity Jagannath.
